Mechanics for Minor Skills
A minor skill is a focus on one use of a major skill. The minor skill functions like this:
- You are always proficient with your selected minor skills.
- If you are not proficient with the major skill, then you simply roll the minor skill with proficiency.
- If you are proficient with the major skill, then the minor skill is rolled with advantage.
- If you have expertise in the major skill, the bonus applies to relevant minor skills.
For example, athletics can be used to jump, swim, and climb, and so there are minor skills for each of these uses. In this example, if your DM requires a Strength (Athletics) check to swim and you have it as a minor skill, you may use the minor skill instead. Here is how that would look with the various rules above:
- Swimming always adds proficiency for you.
- If you are proficient with Athletics, swimming has advantage.
- If you have expertise in Athletics, swimming has expertise and advantage.
All other rules for minor skills are identical to rules for major skills.
Minor Skills and Major Skills
There are two types of skills: major skills and minor skills. Major skills are all the skills defined in the Player's Handbook. Minor skills are defined here. Minor skills are attached to relevant major skills. For example, Geography is a minor skill of Nature.
At character creation, choose any two minor skills. One additional minor skill is acquired at levels 5, 9, 13, and 17.
Minor skills may also be trained as Downtime.
